Script: Adding a USENET News Account (Thunderbird)

Overview

This screencast with audio demonstrates how to add an account for a USENET news-server in Mozilla Thunderbird.

Audio Script

S1: To add an account for newsgroups go to...

S2: the Account Settings dialog in the Tools menu.

S3: Click on Add Account,..

S4: ...and in the account wizzard select Newsgroup Account...

S5: ...and click Next.

S6: Enter your full name and your email address.

S7: The name is a courtesy to other newsgroup users,...

S8: ...and the email address is needed so that others can send you replies to your messages.

S9: In order to access USENET newsgroups you need to have access to just one of the thousands of servers the USENET consists of. If you have a large company as your Internet provider chances are they operate one, and that would be your first choice.

If you don't know any news server simply search Google for the words "free usenet servers". It may not be easy to find what you want, because a lot of newsservers don't carry all newsgroups you may be interested in, and today almost all have access restrictions because of abuse of the system by spammers, i.e. people who send millions of "buy viagra here" or "buy this cheap stock" messages.

S10: Use anything you like as account name. This is just information for you, to recognize this account in the Thunderbird account overview on the left-hand side of the Thunderbird window.

S11: Review the information and click Finish. You don't need to worry about the Outgoing User Name displayed in this summary which you never entered, nor is it needed.

S12:

S13: There are quite a few more settings you could but don't need to change. Only change a setting if you know what you are doing.

S14:

S15:

S16:

S17:

S18: To use the new account and actually read in and post to newsgroups you first have to subscribe to them. There are thousands of newsgroups, so have fun!
