Script: Installing Mozilla Thunderbird

Overview

This screencast with audio demonstrates an installation of Mozilla Thunderbird.

Audio Script – Installation Demo

S1: We made this screencast on Microsoft Windows. On other platforms installation may differ more or less. Especially on Linux it may be VERY different. All Linux distributions include Mozilla Thunderbird so you can install it using your Linux distributions particular software package installer. After downloading the approximately 6 MB installation file double click on it in order to start the installation.

S2: -

S3: After the installation wizard starts it gives you the standard warning to close all other open applications, which is not really necessary and is done only to avoid potential problems if a Microsoft Windows software installation attempts to overwrite any files currently being used by other running software. Therefore you should at least close any already running instances of previous Mozilla Thunderbird installations, if this is a software update and not a new installation of this software. Click next.

S4: One of the first things you are asked to do is to read and accept the relatively short MOZILLA THUNDERBIRD END-USER SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT.

S5: After doing so click on Next.

S6: Now you get to choose a setup type: Standard or Custom. Custom mode offers only three more very simple choices than Standard mode. We are going to continue in Custom mode to show you these additional options.

S7: -

S8: This is the first of three screens you only get to see in "custom installation" mode. Almost everyone should accept the suggested installation location.

S9: Another custom installation option. Here you can choose if the installer should create any shortcut icons for starting Thunderbird. Personally I prefer to have just one icon in one location, just like I don't want more than one ignition switch in my car.

S10: Give the start menu folder for this software a different name, if you like, or select an already existing folder to have the installer add the Thunderbird icons to it instead of creating a new one.

S11: Drink an Espresso and wait until the installer finishes. There is no time for a Café Latte since there is not much to install.

S12: After the installer has finished you can keep the option to launch Thunderbird selected if you want to continue with the basic setup immediately. Now the software is installed but needs to be configured in order to be useful, because so far it knows neither your Email address nor what incoming or outgoing servers to use for sending and receiving email.
